Paleo Christmas Cookie Roundup

One of my favorite childhood traditions was the baking of Christmas cookies. My mom, my brother, and I would spend hours in the steamy, sweet-smelling kitchen mixing, rolling, forming, baking, and decorating. It was so fun and people always loved to get our goodies. Best yet, we loved eating them too!

As I’m working toward healthier eating, meaning pretty-paleo, gluten-free, and low or no refined sugar, I have been looking for recipes to use for this year’s treats. I may just dip into Mom’s favorite, The Joy of Cooking, and doctor up some of those recipes to fit new dietary needs.  Until then, I thought I’d share these with you. I haven’t made them yet, but I’ll let you know my results when I do!  Enjoy!

Landscape

Candy Rock, Stanislaus River

Today’s photo prompt is landscape. Directions include “in the style of Ansel Adams.” Not easy to do.   I scanned through my old photos and found these. Two places I love–my brother’s old property in New Mexico and the North Fork of the Stanislaus river, CA. I can’t tell you where because it’s a *secret* swimming hole.

Not too many landscapes in my collection. I’ll be adding some more soon. Long shot open vistas. Photos to expand the lungs and the mental viewpoint. Big deep breath nature photos. They’re coming.

Fooling with the cropping of the New Mexico photo, here are some options.  Let me know what you think….

Finishing Projects Wabi-Sabi Style

How to finish craft projects:
1.  Wait for a rainy day.
2.  Find some good binge t.v. show to watch (I watched and recommend The Bletchley Circle on Netflix. It’s a murder-mystery starring a group of women who met as WWII Code Breakers at Bletchley Park. A+ for character development and historical value!).
3.  Make, make, make.
4.  Take some pics.

The blanket isn’t done yet, but closer! The stripey circle pillow has been half done for over a year. Now it has a similar, but slightly different stripey pattern on the back and is all sewn up. It’s a little wonky, or should I say, wabi-sabi (the Japanese art of finding beauty in imperfection).

Embracing wabi-sabi is my m.o. these days. I have let go of trying to make things perfect. Small, spare, bent, broken, wonky–these are qualities to embrace. Even watching too much binge t.v. can be embraced occasionally.

I am hoping to give some homemade gifts this Christmas, but I’m a little stuck as to what to make for people. I’m hoping that I’ll get inspired by finishing up some of these other projects.
